About Support Dogs
Founded and based in Yorkshire, Support Dogs is a small, innovative charity dedicated to transforming the independence and quality of life of children and adults affected by some of the most challenging medical conditions. It trains specialist assistance dogs to achieve this.

The charity runs three programmes:
Epilepsy seizure alert dogs providing a 100% reliable warning up to 50 minutes in advance of a seizure.
Disability assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities. The client’s own pet dog is trained to perform tasks which are specifically tailored to their individual needs.

Autism Assistance Dogs for children aged 3 – 10 years with autism. The dogs are trained to provide safety for the child and reduce stress in social environments. They can also assist with the child’s daily routine and with developing independence and creating a calming influence.

Support Dogs is currently facing an unprecedented level of demand for its services. To learn about its services and how you can help please:

"Our 6 year old son called Cohen has a severe form of autism. He is non-verbal and uses Makaton sign language. Although he is a very happy little boy at home, outdoors he becomes extremely anxious. Cohen finds the outside world very challenging, its unpredictable and loud. He struggles processing sensory input, so he finds noisy places very overwhelming. Cohen has no sense of danger and would run onto roads, into rivers or even climb up high to avoid social situations.

Support dogs have helped us to facilitate a positive way to help and support Cohen to live with autism. After been on the waiting list for almost 3 years our 'wonder dog' Azerley came into our lives.

Azerley is a truly amazing dog. He enables Cohen to be safer and calmer when he is outdoors. He gives Cohen confidence and reassurance when he is anxious.

We have only had Azerley a short time but the difference he is making is incredible!

Azerley is learning Cohen's sign language and is picking this up tremendously quick, but incredibly, Cohen is starting to speak! He gives Azerley commands. He is no longer 'shut off' from the world. Cohen engages with Azerley and wants to be with him. After a difficult transition from school to home Cohen seeks a 'Azerley hug'. To hear him giggle and say "Az stay" when he jumps on his bed is unbelievable.

The possibilities for Cohen are now endless and his potential has no bounds. We are excited for the future for our little boy. Thank you to the Azerley Estate for your amazing generosity, it truly is life changing!

Iggy Bracken – Our latest assistance dog trained with money raised by the Azerley Charity Clay Shoot!

Louis is on the autism spectrum and has global development delay; his condition has meant he experiences difficulties in understanding everyday dangers and has found busy places or events challenging whilst having trouble sleeping and being reliant on his wheelchair when leaving the house.

However, this all changed when Louis was introduced to Iggy, Louis’ support dog. Since Iggy arrived things have improved remarkably. Louis has not needed to use his wheelchair once and can visit places he would not have been able to previously. Louis also sleeps well during the night, all because he has Iggy by his side to provide comfort and reassurance. Walking with Iggy helps Louis with his balance and now the pair go everywhere together.
